Many people may not be aware that outside of the energy, ranching and farming sectors, Alberta also has many environmental and conservation ventures.
As Wendy is a Signature Member of the Artists For Conservation Society a Foundation that represents the world's leading collective of artists
focused on nature and wildlife), she decided to paint the Endangered Whooping Crane, whose natural summer breeding ground lies in northern Alberta,
plus currently a very significant conservation effort is being conducted through the Calgary Zoo to ensure the long term survival of this species.

Whooping Cranes are one of three Canadian bird species listed as globally endangered by the World Conservation Union. Thanks to a long-term co-operative
international conservation effort, these amazing birds have been brought back from the brink of extinction in the 1940’s. However, while whooping crane
numbers are increasing they still remain one of the most threatened crane species in the world. The long term survival of this species depends on the development
of new wild flocks through conservation breeding programs and reintroduction efforts. The Calgary Zoo’s Centre for Conservation Research works closely with
husbandry and veterinary experts at the zoo’s Devonian Wildlife Conservation Centre to find ways to increase the breeding success of whooping cranes.
Through collaboration with other partners in the recovery effort, as many cranes as possible are released into the wild each year. The partnership between
the Calgary Zoo and two other facilities in the United States plays a major role in increasing the world’s population of whooping cranes.
